Video Techniques You’ll Want to Copy
By Michelle Schoen |There’s a video I’d like you to see. Not just because I think you may be interested in the product he pitches at the end but actually because I was REALLY impressed with the way he created the video itself. And you know best way to learn how to create your own professional screencasts is to study the work of others.

I’m not crazy at all about video without a controller so you can’t tell how long the video runs and it won’t let you rewind but, in a way, it did force me to sit and watch the whole video- which ended up being a really good thing.
While you are watching it you’ll notice the way he (James Wedmore)transitions back and forth between full motion video and his PowerPoint slides. He also colors and animates his text and adds the colored shapes to his slides just to make things more interesting. And I loved the way he has the full motion video play within a little screen inside his slides. That is a great technique that I need to use more often and makes anyone’s video look more professional. As you watch the video you will notice how, when he does use bullet points, he fades out the other ones and put a new icon next to the one he is discussing. That is a technique that is useful when you really need to put a lot of info on the screen. Take some notes as to what you like about the video and let me know what you would like me to demonstrate on my blog.
The creators, James Wedmore and Lewis Howes, are really well known in the video creation niche and, someday, I hope to get James involved in some of the work Lon and I are doing over at Learn Camtasia. I’m pretty tempted to buy the course because of how well it is priced and I would love to get the YouTube tips. Things are changing so fast in the video marketing area that it pays to stay on top if it by picking up courses like this when they are reasonably priced.

If you try some of these techniques please put a link to your video in the comments.

I also thought it was an amazing video. I have a client who needs this kind of video, now, but will never be able to re-create it themselves. What would you charge to create one like it? (Not as long but same style)
Or do you know someone who does them?
Thanks,
Lauren
That’s a tough one. I think I would need more info on the project because the amount of anmation the client wants is a big determinent of the price. I also do have some students that would do a great job that I can refer. Call me or have your client call me. My number is in the “About” section.
I agree with your comments about the controller! I have been asked to watch this video twice previously, but chose not to, because I did not know the time it would take. I probably would not have seen it at all if you had not asked!
What you could demonstrate?
- How to insert those unique bullet-points – which I have not seen previously
- How to insert a video in a box on the screen
- How to use those various shaped boxes, and how to dim previous selections.
Thanks for your help,
All the best, Bill
WOW! Are those animations and transitions all done with Power Point 2010? I’d love to see the graphic “builds” and the animation panes on each slide. The speed of the transitions matched the rhythmic beat of the music and the speaker. Nice subtle effect.
Michelle, if you could show us, your ever luv’n fans, how best to build just one slide showing those bing!, bing! bing! “bullet words” and animation timings that would be WONDERFUL.
Many thanks, Roger
can you tell me what software is being used to create this video clip.
thanks,
dean

Hi,

Bill- I wrote down your request and they will be the next demos that I do in my next blog post. Look for them.
Roger, My guess is that this video was not done using PowerPoint but almost all of the techniques shown could be replicated. When we do our Q and A on Tuesday for the monthly members over at Learn Camtasia we will do some demos and I will put excerpts of them here.
Dean, my guess is it was done on a Mac in Screenflow but as I said earlier, I believe most of this could be replicated in PowerPoint. Except for a few of the animation styles the PP 2010 does not have yet.
Maurice,
When you submit a video to YouTube you place your website link below it in the description field so, if people want to learn more, they can click on it.
Also at the end of every video you put on YouTube you need to have a ‘call to action’ at the end which tells people where to find more information about you or where they can sign up for something free on your website. I get a lot of traffic from my videos at Youtube this way.
If you invest the $97.00 for the course, and you demonstrate to us how to use some of the Power Point features he used I would be interested. You notice I wrote you, and I’d be more willing to pay you. Because, I got turned off by him (see I can’t even remember his name), and his video for some of the following reasons:
I couldn’t stop/pause the video (take a bathroom or coffee break)
I couldn’t take notes, because I don’t speed write
I couldn’t even find his web site. I “Googled” Video Traffic Academy, and it took me to his video, or other sites that offered reviews.
I just got frustrated, and gave up
Thanks Michelle.
Please send me an email invite to Tuesday’s Learn Camtasia Webinar. Thanks again, Roger Poyner

Dale,
I just got the course and am reviewing it now. I’ll post my review on the blog shortly.
