Testing Out Oovoo for Video Conferencing

After having interviewed Allison Nazarian for my blog last month she invited me to participate in a roundtable for her Website WorkingMomLifeline.com. We decide to use Oovoo to see if it would work for future roundtables. I am always up for checking out new tools that I can use with my client or they can use for teaching or training.  It took a little coaching for a couple of the girls to connect but overall it was a pretty positive experience.

Just to set the stage, OoVoo is a new free videoconferencing solution which allows up to six participants in a video call, as well as recording, text chat, direct file sharing and a lot more.  It integrates VoIP, text chat and the ability to send files to any other videoconferencing attendee as well as good invitation, contacts management and recording features.

The quality of the videoconferencing and the ability to have up to six people video communicating on screen without the need to have a special high-bandwidth line made my experience with Oovoo really successful. As you will see there are a few times where an individual’s video get’s dropped and it gets replaced with their photo or an image, but that didn’t happen a lot so it didn’t bother us. We also had a bit of an issue with feedback from everyone’s computer getting recorded. You be the judge of whether or not it is a tool you could find useful with your client’s projects.

Here is a 3 minute video excerpt of our call….

Glad that you, Allison and the WorkingMomLifeline group had a semi-successful first session on ooVoo. Allison and I have been chatting offline about the sessions and what your group is looking to do with future roundtables, and without tipping our hat too much there is something in the pipeline that we’d like to demo with you all.

The one thing we did notice about your recorded session was the amount of echo being produced; and we’d recommend using headsets where possible for future sessions. Although we do include echo cancellation software in ooVoo, a headset helps to eliminate other background noise and the echo loop. You could also try reducing the levels of the microphone slider in ooVoo.

We’ll keep an eye open and hope to help with the roundtables.

    Best regards,
    Philip Robertson

Michelle, this is great, thanks for taking the time to edit it.
Phil and ooVoo — you really are on the ball. Looking forward to seeing what’s next and to perfecting these Roundtables. (Phil, we will be mentioning ooVoo on Oprah in no time.)
